The Technical Challenge
So, this week (with the help of a friend) I was able to make some progress one of the technical aspects, that being how to record SMS text messages into a database.
- Go to "http://www.andrewhainen.com/phptest/twilio/sms/app-sms.php"
- From your phone, send a text message to the number (415) 599-2671. In the text body, write the number "8850-7927" (dash included) and then write whatever you want. (e.g. IP is a cool class)
- Go back to that website from step 1 and you will see your text displayed along with your phone number.
It is a sketchy way of doing it right now, but that's because I haven't purchased a phone number from this company yet. After I do that, one doesn't have to type in the PIN.
The next step is sending the amount of texts received over to Flash, and then having the animation determine what to do.
The Animation/Story
I was/am totally stuck on this part. The issue:
My story will play out and at a certain point the viewer will have to help out (text in) to get the protagonist's story to finish. So, if there's X amount of texts stored, then he can proceed. If there's less than X amount of texts, then his quest takes a different route.
I'm bouncing back and forth between countless story ideas trying to find a non-gimmicky way to entice the viewer to text in more, and make it compelling and believable. One of the biggest changes I've made is simplifying what the protagonist wants (good guy must catch the bad guy scenario) because it was making my life hell trying to find a reason why the viewer wanted to really help out the story.

Long ways to go, but making progress.
