5 Ideas- Jamie

At this point I have been working on character and costume design and effect ideas for my videos.

Concept for Character: Time

Concept sketch for a female costume with elements indeed to look like clockwork including Gears, metal findings and chains. I would like to use this as a character to represent the past and change, possibly as a dancer, elusive and mysterious.

Makeup and Cold Air

Using the visibility of warm breath in cold air (as we see more than our share of in Michigan) combined with fantasy mkeup a character might be shown as inhuman, monster-like, etc. in a visually striking way. In addition to this I would like to consider the same idea applied to mask working and design masks that are meant to appear to breathe naturally.

Black and White Costuming

Taking the technique of creating light sources and shapes with the use of contrast in a costume or the makeup on an actor, the technique could be applied to extend beyond the body with pieces that extend beyond the body or effectively erase the human form from the screen. This could be very interesting, I think, if applied to festival or parades costumes.

I would also like to note that by using this technique the fantastic characters can be made without the need for lengthy animation techniques and easily be made to interact with physical sets.

Patchwork Fabric and Garments

I want the garments made for these videos to be visually striking along with the movement and editing in the videos. Patchwork fabric garments with decorative topstitching, like this vest, would create further visual interest and depth in the costumes without being a distraction from the video as a whole and add personality to the presentation of the actor that will be wearing it.

Armband

This item is designed with to be used on a dancer to accentuate movement. The extension forearm will make any movement of the arms more visible and dramatic on the screen. Visual interest combined with movement can make a physical performance incredibly more striking.

The use of feathers, depending on the context in which it is presented, could represent wings, flight, freedom of movement (or the loss of it), or a separation from the normal world.

Sam's 5

So just workin on narrowing down to a theme and all that great stuff. Here's my obsessive organization and 5 ok ideas.

Thinkin about doing a theme of scientists/ naturalists/ explorers etc.

Gregor Mendel's childhood

Another theme idea, how to zines. would involve talking to specialists.
Yes, noodling specialists.

Pop up shop potential. No, it probably won't be called 'SHOP'

These are the 5 main characters of my animation:
Growly MacDougal, Stuntbear
Burt the Bearded Lady
Nelson the Human Cannonball
The Brothers Popov
Eduardo the Ghostly Trapezier

5 Ideas- Elyse Shapiro

Drawing for pre-folded mold. Used to permanently alter shape of polyester/ other synthetic materials when heat from steam or press is applied. I plan to print onto fabric first for the outer most layer of my light fixtures, and then alter the permanent shape of it to add texture and depth.
This is an idea to plan the visual imagery of the inside of the orbs. Using a program called "Scantimation" that alters images to make them appear as if they are moving when vertical lines are pulled across it. For example, using imagery I can make it appear as if a person is walking/ an object is rotating, etc.
This is an example of how I can try to use small, detailed patterns to create larger, more graphic imagery. I have done this exercise using several small designs.

This sketch represents how I plan to construct my lighting fixtures with their material and pattern construction.
This is another example of a small detailed pattern that I am planning to place on the outer most layer of my orbs.

After collecting imagery I have started to work on combining some subjects with patterns derived from tapa cloth and working to visualize how they could be interpreted as woodblock prints. I'm going to continue with this process to develop my ideas and concepts more.

This first drawing I was working on abstracting imagery and combining it with pattern work. The semi abstracted birds on a wire however attractive is not necessarily a direction I want to take but will keep it in mind. I do enjoy how space is used and how colors are interacting and mixing with each other.

I moved on to using animals in my drawings but never showing them as a whole. I also used shapes to interpret their settings. From this I started to think more about memories. It's been difficult trying to remember every detail of my homes, many things are fleeting so I started to think about the drawings was making as unclear memories rather then just a depiction of places.
I am using animals because I have always been fascinated by them and what animals live where. I also feel it creates a common ground and I am generally choosing animals that are recognizable.
For the colors I'm using I am taking inspiration from graffiti. Once I start printing I do intend to mix a few muted colors taking consideration of what colors are more common to Fiji but I would like to keep it bright. Using very light colors I also want to create faint patterns as a way to show how some memories are fading but are still a contributing factor. Also in some of the small spaces I am thinking about putting in more tapa cloth patterns but in a subtle fashion to just add texture.

Right now I'm trying to start to think about the reasons I'm creating this images as well as what is relevant for the series as a whole. My idea has evolved away from my original proposal with it now focusing on the idea of memory, home however is still very much involved.

My 5 Favorite Ideas

I have finalized my concept behind the project. I will gather research on my own dreams by keeping a dream journal and work side by side with the U of M's sleep clinic. The sleep clinic will provide further scientific explanations on subconscious thought while the human mind is asleep. My main concern at this point is how I would take this concept, use the media of textiles, and create a final installation or piece to put on display.

1. designing multiple pieces that connect together in CAD/illustrator then using the laser cutter to cut clear pieces of acrylic. On these acrylic pieces I would either screen print or somehow adhere fabric onto them.

2. Combing printing on paper and printing on fabric. I would provide a handout mapping my dreams and what they represent while the viewer wanders through the installation, this map will provide further information. The installation itself would be large scale panels of fabric that represent various dreams, aspects of dreaming, and their representations.

3. Large three dimensional columns created out of various textured fabrics, screen printed glass, fabric, and paper. The mirrors placed in the installation provide a endless sense of presence to the sculptures themselves.

4. Using CAD/Illustrator, designing multiple containers to place fabric in. The label on the container would describe the dream vs. the scientific reasoning/explanation.

5. creating fabric that can be displayed on rotating panels. These panels would be curved to create a circular capsule that the viewer can be immersed in.

5 Ideas from Side by Side

1. Combining three different colors with an abstract styled painting.

2. Korean pattern with traditional colors.

3. Reproducing Kandinsky's color study.

4. Altering colors of Mondrian's piece.

5. Exploring different color combinations with patterns.

Current Ideas (ahainen)

Project Premise (Tech)

  • Viewer watches an animation
  • At point in story, character needs X amount of something to be able to continue.
  • Viewer can text a message to a phone number and that adds +1 to the X amount of things the character needed.
  • Once X amount of something reaches threshold (e.g. 500 texts), character can progress, ending animation plays.

Story Premise (Work in Progress)

  • We find character (Gus, young boy) living at a desolate, out of operation gas station in the middle of the desert.  Gus has become bored and lonesome.
  • Flashback to Gus at home a long time ago wishing he could run away (reasons TBD).  One morning he gets his wish and wakes up at this gas station in the middle of nowhere.
  • Gus loves it, meets humanoid gas pump named Corley there.  After awhile Gus becomes lonesome and bored with nothing happening, arrive back at opening shot.
  • On the road is a sign pointing back to his hometown and that it's 100 miles away.  Gus determines that he wants to get back home, but has no way of getting there without getting stranded in the desert.
  • Story gets to a loop/pivot where Gus finds a way home but it's not functional. e.g. An old car that could run if it had gas, viewer texts in to start gas flowing to the gas station.
  • Once Gus has enough gas or the ability to get home provided by the user - instead of leaving he wakes up back at home and values it much more.

Animation Style (Technical demo)
  • Storybook animation.  Short, simple sequences play out and get to a screensaver-type loop and then viewer clicks next "page" to see the next sequence.
  • Text and possible voiceover narration integrated for storytelling.
  • Modeled in 3D, but made to look 2D.  Simplistic style, flat color shading.
Working style, feel.  (Detail coming next)

Five of the Fifty ideas from The Island of Misfit Toys

1. This is the design I have chosen for the monster of my story. The body was influenced by many different sources, from rodents to Philippine folklore.

2. The decision to create a music video. Which music to use is still up in the air. The song I was looking at using is Besitos by Pierce the Veil.

3. The rough sketch of my Boy character. Still unrefined, needs to be worked on, but his personality is there. Innocent, hard-working, farmboy, etc.

4. Selection of my color palette. Contains skintones, environment tones, colors designated for certain characters. Need to pare it down a bit.

5. Rough Sketch of the Girl Character. Like the boy sketch, need to be refined, but contains aspects of the personality. Quiet, kind, conservative, etc.

Thats all for now
