Studio Progress 11/1

Over the past week I've been working on pattern designs for my quilts. I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of work it took to make the pattern I used in my prototype, so I decided to go back to the drawing board and start with a simpler design. I wanted to simplify all the ideas that were floating in my head, so I decided to break it down and only work with square-shaped units. I was surprised to find that these new designs were much more successful than my previous ones in terms of achieving what I wanted: something optical, visually striking, distorted, and geometric. I also found that my designs became much more interesting when there was some form of randomness involved. My other sketches were too static and therefore not as intriguing. Here are some of the not-quite-so-successful designs:
